High above the skies of Las Vegas stands the country’s tallest freestanding tower – the Stratosphere Tower. This is probably the best place to enjoy 360 degree panoramic views of the entire city, as well as enjoy maximum entertainment attractions that are sure to thrill even the most die-hard action fundies. The Stratosphere, towering at 1,149 feet, is made up of two main observation decks, the outdoor deck, which stands at 869 feet, and the indoor ‘pod’ deck. It is also home to one of the most famous restaurants in the world – the Top of the World – that revolves 360 degrees every hour to provide diners with the ultimate view of Las Vegas.
The indoor deck is accessed via an ultra-speed elevator that reaches 857 feet in just 30 seconds – a dizzying ride that leaves one quite breathless. This deck is called the pod because it stands on just three legs and is home to several gift stores, a snack bar and powerful lenses to view the spectacular view. The Pod is also from where visitors can reach the incredible attraction known as the Big Shot. From a 920 feet high platform, visitors experience 4 G’s as they are literally shot up into the air up to 1081 feet at 45 mph. The ride takes thrill seekers up and down in a matter of seconds several times over before bringing them safely back to the launch platform.
The outdoor deck on Stratosphere Tower is popular with sunbathers during the summer months, however it is also home to two major Las Vegas attractions – X-Scream and Insanity. X-Scream has been called the scariest ride in the world, and for very good reasons too. Passengers are placed side by side on a teeter-totter carriage and thrust into the air, after which the tracks literally dive off the side of the Tower at a petrifying 30-degree angle. The carriage suddenly stops in mid-air as passengers experience the feeling of dangling at 900 feet above ground level. A maximum number of eight passengers can join this ride that runs daily until way past midnight.
Also found on the outdoor deck on Stratosphere Tower is the last word in thrill rides – Insanity. This attraction places passengers in a mechanical arm that spins them madly 64 feet over the edge of the Tower, at a height of 900 feet. The arm propels passengers this way and that until they reach the ultimate 70 degree position and find themselves viewing the city of Las Vegas from literally upside down – that is if they dare to open their eyes! The beauty of Insanity – the Ride is that it can operate in 100 different ways and so repeat passengers may never experience the same ride twice.
Prices for all thrill rides found on the two observation decks cost a nominal fee and combo packages and day passes can be purchased to enjoy everything that this great location has to offer.
