Black Mountain Golf and Country Club is a semi-private golf and country club that claims to be “the most unique and affordable golf experience in Las Vegas .”Black Mountain serves Henderson, Nevada as its home-town course, and it was the third to be built in the greater Las Vegas area. The blue collar club’s family atmosphere, elite course maintenance, affordable rates, and quality customer service attracts golfers of all ages and skill levels. Why Henderson ? The reasoning behind building a golf course in the middle of nowhere was to provide a quality place to golf during the warm desert winters. Plus, the entire tract was sold affordably by the Bureau of Land Management.
Golfers will find Black Mountain ’s green and leafy front nine to be wide open, and even average golfers will recover from wrong-headed drives or missed greens to pull through reasonable shots at par. The tree-lined back nine is tougher from tee to green. The par-4 10th hole, at 391 yards, is easily considered the most difficult driving hole on the course. The par-4 11th hole, at 430 yards, is the longest two-shot on the course; the green is an upside down tee cup, sloping off in all directions. And the par-3 12th, at 180 yards, is a one-shotter that’s rated the most difficult hole on the course with a miniscule putting service and deep bunkers on the green’s right and left.
Ron Walker of Golf Publisher draws attention to what he calls the “ Black Mountain breeze,” those gusting winds that add another dimension to a standard golf game.
Twenty-six golfers reviewed the course for golfcourse.com. On a scale from one to five, with five being the highest, golfers rated the course’s conditions at 3.3, pace at 3.3, service at 3.7, value at 3.5, and gave an overall score of 3.3 out of 5.
Black Mountain also plays host the local qualifiers for the US Open, Pub Links, and the Mid Amateur. Statistics show that players post higher scores, due to the winds, than at the host course at the next level.
