Course Review:

Described as "The Pinehurst" of Las Vegas, Desert Pines Golf Club was originally built in the center of Las Vegas as an agreement to turn a rundown area of the city into a golf course. Bill Walters’ vision of the golf course consisted of bringing in 4,000 pine trees, creating narrow fairways, offering risk and reward golf holes, and adding a feel of the Carolinas in the middle of Las Vegas. Today, the public, daily fee course has become an ideal golfing venue for budget-minded golfers looking for a quality course and amenities. In addition, the course has been recognized as one of the best new upscale courses in the country by Golf Digest.

Designed by Dye Designs, course features include thousands of mature pine trees line the fairways, white sand bunkers protecting greens, and water coming into play on nine out of the 18 holes.

In December 2005, Walters had to close the course for three months due to turf disease. The grass was converted to TiffEagle Bermuda grass and the course reopened in late February 2006.

Each section of the course is intended to challenge and entertain a golfer’s game. For example, the par-71 is about 6,800 yards of narrow fairways and water features yet with enough green to get a hit. Hole number 4 is 322 yards and water does affect play until the fairway ends.

Desert Pines is also home to the Desert Pines Practice Center , a state of the art practice facility. The 20,000 square foot, two-tiered complex features a fully lit range for day or evening practice, 58 climate controlled tee stations and a computerized, automated ball-delivery system that allows players to practice without bending to tee a ball. The five target greens are similar to some of the country’s most elite par-three 17th holes such as Pebble Beach , Plum Creek, TPC Sawgrass, Pinehurst No. 2, and Harbor Town Golf Links. The two computerized teaching bays with four cameras provide students with panoramic angle views of their swing. Beginner or avid golfers looking to enhance their game can take advantage of the teaching center that includes instruction from PGA teaching professionals of The Walters Golf Academy.

There is an onsite restaurant, Duffers Bar & Grill that serves breakfast and lunch daily, and is a popular spot for local businessmen during lunch time. On-course food and beverage service is available. The Champions Room can accommodate up to 175 people for private functions and meetings.

The well-equipped Desert Pines Golf Shop offers a variety of brand name golf clubs, shoes, equipment and apparel. Equipment selection includes Callaway, Cleveland , Titleist, Ping and Odyssey while clothing lines include Ashworth, Cutter & Buck, and Tommy Bahama. The golf shop also conveniently carries a wide selection of eyewear and sunglasses such as Oakley.

Desert Pines is conveniently located less than 10 minutes from downtown Las Vegas , and less than 15 minutes from the Las Vegas Strip.
