The first mention of Fernley appeared in the January 1905 Official Guide of the Railways and Steam Navigation of the United States, where Fernley was listed as a railroad stop. The Fernley area was affected by the economic growth of the state due to the mining boom and settlers demanded farming supplies, timber, railroad access and water projects. The demand and subsequent supply of these resources resulted in the expansion of Fernley. In 1908, a post office was established in the city and a school house was also built.
Being a city, Fernley offers visitors a wealth of comforts and amenities – hotels, bars, casinos, restaurants and museums. However, much of Fernley’s charm comes from the fact that it is not too commercialized like the big cities and still offers a rural ambiance. Fernley also offers spectacular recreational facilities with endless access to boating, fishing, hunting, hiking, biking, rodeo, golf, skiing and more. The city’s all-year round clear skies allow a visitor to take advantage of these adventure facilities in all four seasons.
Pyramid Lake located on the Paiute Indian reservation boasts stunning beaches and clear water perfect for fishing and boating. Lahontan Lake, part of the historic Newlands irrigation project is also a great destination for boaters, fishers and swimmers. Walker Lake is a wonderful place to visit in April when the annual Loon Festival is held.
Camping and hiking make up an essential element of holidaying in the Fernley area. The stunning scenery, the ample open spaces and nature at its best provides the camper with endless choices of activities. The nature lover will also marvel at the wide range of natural species that frequent the area – bird watching can be tried by all!
