Las Vegas is the largest city in Nevada . It got its name from a Spanish party who visited the area on their way west. Because of springs in some of the lower elevation areas, there were large grass fields that dotted the arid landscape. The Spaniards named the area Las Vegas , meaning “The Meadows” in Spanish.
desert climate makes up most of the greater Las Vegas area. Summer highs here reach to more than 105 degrees Fahrenheit. The lack of rain leaves valley ground dry, hard and non-absorbent which causes major flooding when heavy rains do hit the area. Surrounded by the towering Spring Mountain Range, Las Vegas is situated in a valley in the shadow of rocky peaks covered with trees and various types of rock.
