For centuries nature has used the power of the Colorado River and other tools and events to carve what is now known as the Grand Canyon . This breathtaking formation reaches 277 miles in length, 18 miles wide and more than 5,000 feet deep in some areas. The surrounding rims of the canyon are comprised of two distinct ecosystems. The north rim features a wet climate with plenty of rain and a landscape dotted with trees and lush vegetation. The south rim is an arid desert terrain with very little plant and animal life and very few natural springs.
The Hualapai Indian Tribe has lived on this land for many years. Their name means “People of the Tall Pines” and they currently have over 2,300 tribal members. The Hualapai Reservation encompasses one million acres in northwest Arizona , 108 of which are a part of the Grand Canyon . Traditionally, the Hualapai Tribe moves seasonally between the canyon and the surrounding plateau.
