The Hoover Dam is considered one of the greatest engineering feats in the world. Construction on the dam began in 1931 and work conditions were extremely dangerous. A total of 94 workers were killed while working on it. The dam’s main purpose was to breathe life into this desolate area by diverting water from the Colorado River to outlying areas. The success of the project restored faith in a country recovering from the Great Depression and became one of the most recognized construction feats of the 20 th century. Today Hoover Dam provides power to California , Arizona and Nevada . It is a National Historic Landmark, Nevada ’s number one sightseeing attraction, and one of America ’s Seven Modern Civil Engineering Wonders.
