Course Review:

The Las Vegas National Golf Club is a history-filled golfing attraction situated in the middle of Las Vegas . The championship golf course is conveniently located two miles from the Strip and the Las Vegas Convention Center .

Opening for play in October 1961 as the Stardust Country Club, Las Vegas National is one of the oldest golf courses in Las Vegas . In 1998, it was renamed for the final time to the Las Vegas National Golf Club. Although the site has possessed different names and owners, the quality of golf has been maintained. Today, Las Vegas National features an inviting clubhouse, a trendy restaurant and bar, a fully-equipped pro-shop, banquet and meeting rooms, chipping and putting greens, and the Ken Venturi Golf School .

Throughout the years, Las Vegas National has seen some of the world’s most famous celebrities and professional athletes walk through their doors. The club was a favorite hangout for Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack who often entertained guests in the lounge. In 1995, the acclaimed movie ‘Casino,’ starring Robert DeNiro and Sharon Stone was filmed at Las Vegas National. The ‘Casino’ house is found off to the left of the #1 tee box, between #18 and #1 fairways.

Golfers will easily forget that they are in the desert when playing at Las Vegas National. Designed by Bert Stamps, the traditional 18-hole course is surrounded by rolling fairways, glistening lakes, and greens well protected by thousands of palm, pine, and olive trees. The course strategically combines five long and difficult par 3's with four medium par 5's. Three par 4's measure 366 yards or less, while the other six play 406 to 442 yards. The shortest par 3, the 182-yard 11 th is rated as the course's easiest hole. Players would beg to differ. The long yet shallow green is situated close to OB left and is fronted by a deep bunker right. Strong and fair par 5’s open and closes the round. The No. 1 handicap hole is the longest par 4, the 442-yard sixth. The shortest par 4 is the 345-yard 17th. The course’s signature hole is no. 18, an ideal risk-reward closer. The dogleg-right par 5 measures 550 yards from the elevated back tees. It’s well guarded by water right and bunkers front, left and right. However, you can find success with the deep yet narrow green with a big drive.

This landmark course has a long history of hosting PGA and LPGA events.  The first professional event held at the club was the LPGA Championship from 1961 to 1966. LPGA hall-of-famer Mickey Wright won two of her LPGA championships here. In 1967 and 1968, the Stardust Country Club hosted the PGA Tournament of Champions. It was one of only four courses to host the prestigious event. Also in 1967, golfing legend Arnold Palmer set the original course record of 63. The record held for 28 years until Tom Kite broke it in 1991 with a 62.  The Las Vegas Invitational was held here from 1993 to 1996. In 1996, Tiger Woods won his first PGA Tour win here. He took home $297,000.
