Course Review:

Palm Valley is an 18-hole, semi-private club that offers a clean game in a super location, that some players have described as a “meticulously cared-for” course that is aimed for the price-sensitive, with a layout that’s been described as “player-friendly.” With prime prices (cart included) topping out just over $100, Palm Valley ’s been described as “affordable” and a “good value.”

The mountain views from the course are widely acclaimed as “spectacular” so that each year, Palm Valley hosts Southern Nevada Golf Association events. This course is one of three conveniently located a quarter of an hour away from Las Vegas at Sun City community in Summerlin, and with a rating/slope of 72/127 it’s the longest and toughest among the immediately-adjacent courses. Golf Digest describes this as “an average course by Vegas standards,” rating Palm Valley the state’s 9 th best public course, with special kudos for the personable staff.

The “neatly-manicured” links are laid out over mildly rolling terrain playing to 6,580 yards; the greens were resurfaced in 2003, and the bunkers redone in 2006. Tournament Director Paul Brown says, “it’s not target golf in that it’s very forgiving. If you hit the ball off target, you’re still in some kind of green grass.” Wide fairways and big greens help even novice players to score well.

The putting surfaces are large in design and undulate mildly, but watch out for water on seven holes and steer clear of the 80 bunkers. The four par-5 holes vary between sort and medium length; the two longest are open and close the round. The 1 st hole plays 537 yards; the signature hole at Palm Valley is the par five 18 th, which measures 534 yards.

Players find the 18th places a premium on accuracy as it doglegs right, with water to the right from tee to green, and an out-of-bounds on the left. Brown says, “it will test you. It’s bunkered in such a way where it will definitely catch an errant shot in the green.” Like the other two Sun City courses ( Highland Falls and Eagle Crest), Palm Valley features its own driving range and practice green.

Ten players, polled by golfcourse.com, tanked its facilities on a scale from one to five (with one being the lowest, and five highest); for conditions, average score 3.7; for pace, average score 3.6; for service, average score 3.5; for value, average score 4.0; overall, average score 3.8. First of three Sun City Community courses, Palm Valley was designed by Phoenix, AZ-based Casper/Nash & Associates.
