Situated right on the intersection where Las Vegas Boulevard meets Tropicana Avenue, the Roller Coaster attached to the New York, New York Hotel & Casino is a not-to-be-missed entertainment destination in the city. This hair-raising, gut-wrenching, totally insane roller coaster ride has been one of the most popular attractions in Las Vegas since its grand opening in 1997, drawing more than 1 million visitors each year to experience the best views of the city, combined with the deepest plunges and one of the wildest experiences ever!
Despite being in the geographical destination of Las Vegas, visitors may be forgiven for thinking that they are in fact located in New York. In the background stands a 150-foot giant replica of Manhattan’s icons, the Statue of Liberty, as well as a frieze of the New York harbor. Even the passenger cars are designed to look like New York taxicabs! This all adds to the fantasy and surrealism of the roller coaster ride.
The ride itself has been described as ‘exhilarating’ by some of the bravest amusement park fans in the world. It takes visitors up 204 feet at a pace slow enough to enjoy the spectacular view but nerve-wracking enough to anticipate the big drop that comes soon afterwards. As if without warning, the roller coaster drops its passengers nearly 150 feet in a rush that has everyone gasping for air. And if that is not enough, the ride continues is a long series of loops, turns, corkscrew twists, jet fighter barrel rolls where passengers turn at an incredible 180 degrees and then hangs them upside down at 87 feet! Passengers will also experience the famous ‘heartline’ twist and dive that makes this roller coaster ride so popular.
The roller coaster runs at an impressive speed of 67 miles per hour – definitely fast enough to cause any pulse to race. The entire duration of the ride is 2 minutes and 45 seconds, although this may seem like a lifetime considering the type of experience! The roller coaster caters to over one thousand visitors at any given hour, in three sixteen-passenger trains.
The Roller Coaster at New York, New York operates on Fridays and Saturdays from 10:30 am to midnight, and all other days of the week from 11 am to 11 pm. Passengers can purchase single tickets or a reduced rate second-ride ticket to experience the thrills another time. Reduced family tickets are also available, as well as an all day “Scream Pass”. It is important to note that riders may not be below 54 inches in height, nor may they carry loose articles onto the rides with them.
Of course, visitors will want to remember one of the most incredible rides of their lives and for that reason, they can purchase souvenir photographs of themselves taken while up on the roller coaster.
This is one destination that visitors will definitely not want to miss on their next visit to Las Vegas!
