The Valley of Fire is a magnificent contrast to the bright lights and concrete filled streets of Las Vegas. Located just 55 miles northeast of Las Vegas, this is the oldest and largest of Nevada's state parks. Here you will find amazing red sandstone formations and the beautiful sight of the Mojave Desert. Petrified wood and Indian petroglyphs dating back more than 3,000 years are also on display and offer a look into the rich history of the area.
The Valley of Fire got its name from the beautiful red sandstone that fills the area. These rock formations came about after millions of years and were begun by shifting sand dunes. The valley’s inhabitants have included the Basket Maker people and the Anasazi Pueblo tribe from Moapa Valley. Within the valley amazing natural sites await including Atlatl Rock, a rock formation featuring dozens of ancient petroglyphs and Fire Canyon/Silica Dome, a gathering of unique geological features. Rainbow Vista, a beautiful rock formation with multicolored sandstone, is also a visitor favorite.
Located just south of the Valley of Fire are the Buffington Pockets. This area is filled with fantastic rock formations bearing the only written record of those who have lived in the area. Ancient petroglyphs can be found along the rock walls and rock shelters are very apparent. Seeing and touching these rocks is like stepping back in time and is sure to be an unforgettable experience.
