Verdi came into being as a residence for lumber workers and those constructing the Central Pacific Railroad, which passed through town in the mid 1800s. The community is infamous as being the site of one of the largest train robberies of that era, an unsolved crime that netted the robbers over $41,000. Lumbering continued in Verdi until 1926 when a large fire destroyed Verdi Lumber Company. Today, Verdi is essentially a suburb of Reno and a first stop across the California line.
The primary resort in Verdi is the Boomtown Casino Hotel. This 318-room resort and RV park features a large indoor swimming pool; a variety of eateries including a steakhouse, a Mexican cantina, and a Starbuck’s coffee house; and a casino featuring slots, table games, and a sports book. The resort also boasts a museum of classic Studebaker automobiles and a small wedding chapel.
Verdi lies adjacent to Tahoe National Forest and makes a convenient base for climbing, biking, hiking, and exploring the park. The area surrounding Verdi is noted for its excellent biking trails. In addition, the water sports offered by Lake Tahoe are just a 30 minute drive away.
