Background and History

Built in the early 1930's in the Depression-Era Neoclassical style, the Las Vegas Post Office and Courthouse has been one of the most notable landmarks in Downtown Las Vegas for decades. By the end of the 1990's, this elegant property lost much of its purpose for municipal applications. Federal agencies officially sold the building to Las Vegas for a symbolic value of only one dollar. Click to book The Mob Museum admission. However, the city was supposed to redevelop the former courthouse and post office into a new cultural venue. More than 42 million dollars were spent on the renovation of this historic edifice. Federal, state and local grants were primarily used to transform the courthouse into The Mob Museum. In 2012, this attraction opened to the general public in the heart of Downtown Las Vegas. The founders of the institution have worked on other prominent projects, including the opening of the International Spy Museum in the nation's capital. Today, The Mob Museum operates as a non-profit organization with official 501(c)3 status. In 2017, the Museum received accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums; the highest national recognition afforded U.S. museums.
